What is Lip Filler?

Lip filler is a cosmetic injectable treatment that uses hyaluronic acid — a substance naturally found in the body — to add volume, definition, and shape to the lips. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the gold standard for lip enhancement because they are biocompatible, reversible, and produce soft, natural-feeling results. Common brands include Juvederm, Restylane, and Versa, each with slightly different properties suited to different lip goals. Lip filler can address a wide range of concerns: thin lips that lack volume, asymmetry between the upper and lower lip, a flat cupid's bow, undefined lip borders, vertical lip lines, and a downturned mouth. It can also be used to subtly lift the corners of the mouth for a more rested, pleasant expression.

How Does It Work?

Hyaluronic acid filler is injected into specific areas of the lips using a fine needle or blunt-tipped cannula, depending on the technique and area being treated. The filler integrates with the tissue, attracting water molecules to create soft, hydrated volume. Your injector will map out the treatment plan based on your lip anatomy, facial proportions, and desired outcome. The appointment typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, including consultation and numbing time. Most lip fillers contain lidocaine — a local anesthetic — which makes the treatment more comfortable as it progresses. Results are immediately visible, though some swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal and will settle to reveal the final result.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Lip filler is appropriate for adults who want to enhance the size, shape, or definition of their lips. Good candidates are in good general health, have realistic expectations, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding. Clients who have had cold sores (herpes simplex) in the past should inform their provider, as lip injections can occasionally trigger an outbreak — antiviral medication taken before the appointment can prevent this. Clients with certain autoimmune conditions or active skin infections near the treatment area may not be candidates. A thorough consultation ensures the treatment is right for you.

What to Expect

Your appointment begins with a consultation to discuss your goals and review your lip anatomy. Photographs are taken. A topical numbing cream is applied and left on for 15 to 20 minutes. Your injector then carefully places the filler using a precise technique tailored to your lip structure. The injection process takes 15 to 20 minutes. Immediately after, your lips may appear slightly swollen and uneven — this is completely normal. The full, settled result is visible at 10 to 14 days. Most clients are thrilled with their results at the two-week mark. If any minor adjustments are desired, a follow-up appointment can be scheduled.

Recovery & Downtime

Lip filler has minimal downtime. Most clients return to normal activities the same day. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness are the most common side effects and typically resolve within three to seven days. Applying ice wrapped in a cloth for the first few hours helps manage swelling. Avoid kissing, drinking through straws, or applying pressure to the lips for 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications for 24 hours before and after treatment to minimize bruising. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated the first night can also help reduce swelling.

Pricing

Lip filler is priced per syringe. Most clients achieve their desired result with one syringe, though clients with very thin lips or those seeking significant enhancement may benefit from two syringes. We offer transparent pricing and will provide a personalized recommendation during your consultation. Financing through CareCredit and Cherry is available, and we regularly offer promotional pricing on lip filler — check our Promotions page for current offers.
